Murphy surprised everyone when he showed up at Mass one Sunday. The priest nearly dropped his hymnal — Murphy had never set foot in church before!

After the service, the priest caught up with him.

“Murphy,” he said, “I’m so glad you came. What brought you in today?”

Murphy scratched his head. “Well, Father, I’ll be honest. I lost my favorite hat a while back. I remembered that McGlynn has one just like it, and he comes to church every week. I figured he’d leave it in the back during Mass, so I came with a plan to quietly take it after Communion.”

The priest raised an eyebrow. “But you didn’t take it. What changed your mind?”

Murphy smiled. “Your sermon on the Ten Commandments.”

The priest’s eyes welled up. “Ah, so when I spoke about ‘Thou Shalt Not Steal,’ you had a change of heart?”

Murphy chuckled. “Not exactly, Father. When you got to ‘Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery’… I suddenly remembered where I left my hat.”
